The Scarborough-York Region Chinese Business Association was established in
1983. We act as a liaison between our members and the three levels of government
on matters of business as well as community affairs. For the year 1999-2000, we
have also been elected to represent the Confederation of Greater Toronto Chinese
Business Association for liaison with the three levels of government.
The growth of the Chinese population in the Markham, North York, Scarborough and
Richmond Hill areas has been extraordinary. It is therefore essential that there
be an alliance of Chinese businesses, a united voice that can command attention.
Through meetings and seminars, our Association gives its members the opportunity
to exchange ideas and solve problems that may arise in their day-to day business
lives. Our membership consists of entrepreneurs, small business people and
professionals from a large number of fields. Our quarterly newsletter strives to
be informative and to offer a forum for members to raise their concerns.
The Association has been very actively involved, not only in business and
financial fields, but in cultural, health and policy issues as well. It supports
charitable organizations and has raised over $500,000 for the community.
In 1996, the Scarborough-York Region Chinese Business Association and the
Markham Board of Trade signed a formal "Memorandum of Understanding"
to create an environment whereby Chinese and mainstream businesses in Markham
can interact more readily with one another. Both parties have agreed to sell
joint memberships to both organizations thereby allowing their members to access
the benefits and services of the two organizations. This partnership, with
participation by member companies in each others' functions and events, will
help create business relationship and an understanding of each others' cultures.
To sum up, the objectives of our Association are:
- To promote unity, co-operation and mutual assistance within the Chinese
business community in Scarborough, North York and York Region in Ontario.
- To serve as a liaison body for the members of the Association with various
levels of government and other business associations.
- To assist in the development and promotion of Chinese business in
Scarborough, North York and York Region in Ontario.
